From Bread to Vodka:
The Unexpected Story of Altamura Wheat
giovanni.dalessandro
A fascinating look at how this iconic grain has evolved from bread-making to Premium Vodka.
Some ingredients were always destined for greatness. Altamura wheat is one of them.
For centuries, this ancient grain has been at the heart of Italy’s most cherished traditions. It has shaped the golden crusts of Pane di Altamura, filled kitchens with the scent of fresh pasta, and earned a Protected Designation of Origin (DOP) status, standing alongside some of Italy’s most celebrated exports – Parma ham, Modena balsamic, and San Marzano tomatoes. And now? It’s making vodka. The world’s finest vodka, in fact.
Altamura Wheat: A Grain Like No Other
Altamura wheat isn’t just wheat. It’s history, flavour, and craftsmanship woven into every grain. Grown in the sun-drenched fields of Puglia, it has long been prized for its rich character, high protein content, and deep, nutty flavour. Bakers have sworn by it for centuries, crafting loaves so perfect they have been protected by law since 37 BC. Yes, 37 BC.
But great ingredients don’t just stay in one lane. When a grain is this exceptional, it demands to be explored.
From the Oven to the Glasss
While Altamura wheat has been shaping Italy’s most famous bread for centuries, its full-bodied complexity and delicate sweetness make it the perfect base for something even more refined… vodka. Most vodkas are made from whatever is cheapest – corn, rye, even potatoes.
The goal? Neutrality. But Altamura Distilleries Vodka takes a different approach.
By using Altamura wheat, this vodka isn’t just smooth—it’s layered, nuanced, and impossibly elegant. It carries hints of soft grain, a whisper of sweetness, and a finish that lingers like the last light over the Puglian countryside.
The result? A vodka that doesn’t just mix. It stands on its own.
Why Altamura Wheat Makes Better Vodka
- The secret is in the quality, the climate, and the craft.
- The Quality: Altamura wheat isn’t mass-produced or stripped of character. It’s grown with the same care that has sustained Italy’s best baking traditions for over 2,000 years.
- The Climate: Puglia’s warm Mediterranean sun, cool breezes, and mineral-rich soil create the perfect conditions for wheat that is bold yet balanced, strong yet refined.
- The Craft: Unlike industrial vodkas that erase every trace of their origins, Altamura Distilleries Vodka celebrates its wheat, enhancing its natural flavour rather than stripping it away.

The Evolution of an Icon
From ancient ovens to modern martinis, Altamura wheat has been feeding, inspiring, and indulging generations. What started as the backbone of Italy’s most famous bread has evolved into the foundation of a vodka unlike any other. It’s smooth, complex, and deeply rooted in Italian craftsmanship.
So whether it’s baked into a loaf or poured into a glass, one thing is certain…
Altamura wheat was never meant to be ordinary.
And with Altamura Distilleries Vodka, it never will be.
Martini Thai: A Taste of Two Worlds

Sipping on Scenery: Inspired by The White Lotus’ Exotic Destinations
Some places call to us with an irresistible allure… a mix of sun-drenched beauty, whispered secrets, and indulgent luxury. Places where nights stretch into mornings, where the air is thick with the scent of citrus and salt, and where the only rule is to embrace the glorious art of misbehaving.
Watching the opening episode of Mike White’s latest season of The White Lotus—set against the lush backdrop of Koh Samui, at one of our friends, the Four Seasons Group’s iconic resorts—we couldn’t help but think back to the previous season, framed by the golden glow of Sicily’s historic Taormina.
The contrast of these two worlds, each seductive in its own way, inspired us to bring them together in a chilled glass.
Enter the Martini Thai, crafted by our Head of Brand, Lorenzo Di Cola. A cocktail that marries Altamura Distilleries’ Italian craftsmanship with the bold, aromatic flavours of Thailand, creating a drink that feels both luxurious and unexpected—just like the most indulgent getaways. A spicy, zesty twist on a Dirty Martini, this is a cocktail for long, languid evenings as the sun sets, whatever hemisphere you’re in.
Whether you find yourself in a marble-clad bar overlooking the Andaman Sea, a sun-drenched terrace in Taormina, or simply at home, dreaming of your next escape, the Martini Thai brings a taste of the extraordinary, wherever you are.

-
- How to serve it:

A Cocktail Worth Escaping For
The Dirthai Martini is all about indulgence and escape—because some of the best nights start with a sip, and end when the sun rises.
With a glass of Altamura Distilleries Vodka in hand, the world becomes a little more beautiful, a little more mysterious, and infinitely more pleasurable.
Because the best moments happen when you least expect them… especially when you’re living your own version of la Dolce Vita.
The History of the Espresso Martini:
From London’s Glamour to Italian Allure
giovanni.dalessandro
How a bold London creation found its sultry Italian soul
In the dimly lit corners of 1980s London, where the air was thick with ambition and the nights promised endless possibilities, a legend was born. At the heart of this tale is Dick Bradsell, a bartender with a knack for alchemy, and a mysterious supermodel whose request would forever change the cocktail landscape.
The Birth at Fred’s Club
Picture this: the pulsating energy of Fred’s Club in Soho, a haven for the elite and the enigmatic. One evening, a striking figure – rumoured to be a supermodel in her heyday – glides to the bar. With a gaze that could ignite the night, she purrs, “Darling, I need something that will wake me up and then…” Well, you get the idea. Bradsell, ever the maestro, combined the richness of freshly brewed espresso with the clarity of premium vodka, adding a touch of coffee liqueur for depth. The result? The Espresso Martini – a drink as invigorating as it is intoxicating, embodying the very essence of 80s excess and elegance.
The Italian Connection: Con La Mosca
While the Espresso Martini was making waves in London, Italy had its own seductive coffee-infused tradition: Sambuca con la Mosca. Translating to ‘Sambuca with the fly,’ this classic serve features three toasted coffee beans floating atop the anise-flavored liqueur. Each bean symbolizes health, happiness, and prosperity – a trifecta of desires in every sip. The visual of the dark beans against the clear spirit was as captivating as an Italian sunset, and the ritual of toasting to life’s pleasures added a layer of intimacy to the experience. So it was only natural that this little flourish of Italian flair would find its way into the Espresso Martini, elevating it from a bold London invention to a drink with an irresistible whisper of Italian seduction.
What started as a late-night request in Soho became a visual feast, a sensory indulgence, and a global icon of effortless cool that sees the evening stretch out into the early hours. The robust flavors of Italian espresso, known for its intense aroma and velvety texture, elevated the cocktail to new heights. Marrying this with Italy’s artisanal spirits and the nation’s flair for la dolce vita, the Espresso Martini transformed from a London-born rebel to an Italian sophisticate. Today, whether you’re in a chic Roman café or a late night haunt in Soho, the Espresso Martini stands as a testament to cross-cultural allure – a drink that awakens the senses and stirs the soul.
Crafting Your Own Italian-Inspired Espresso Martini
To bring a touch of Italian seduction to your next soirée, here’s a recipe that pays homage to its storied past. Sip slowly, allowing the rich coffee notes to entwine with the smooth vodka, and let the legacy of the Espresso Martini transport you to a world where every moment is a tantalising dance between day and night.
The Espresso Martini
- Method:
- Add vodka, coffee liqueur, and the cooled espresso
- Shake vigorously, as if dancing the tarantella
- Strain into a chilled coupette
- Gently place the three coffee beans on top, whispering a wish for each
- Ingredients:
- 50ml Altamura Distilleries Vodka
- 30ml Mr Black Coffee Liquer
- 30ml Espresso
- 1 bar spoon of Simple Syrup
- Ice cubes
- 3 coffee beans for garnish
(representing health, happiness, and prosperity)

Born in Slovakia, Martin Hudak is for sure one of the world’s best-known bartenders but, also, much more than this. He’s the co-founder of the Sydney venues Maybe Sammy and Sammy Junior and with his team mates Stefano Catino, Paolo Maffietti and Sarah Proietti he travels the whole globe making new experiences.
We met him for the first time at the Venice Cocktail Week 2022… it was love at first sight. He joined Altamura Distilleries in Venice for a Masterclass about the “Art of hospitality” at Experimental Cocktail Club and a Bar Takeover in the luxurious venue of Aman Venice. But this was not the only event we had with him in Italy. In april 2023 we met him again at the Florence Cocktail Week, for other two special events: a Guest Shift at Locale and a Cocktail Launch with Martina Bonci at Gucci Giardino 25.

Marielle Songy | My Tales of the Cocktail Experience, 2023
“Another Tales of the Cocktail is in the books; as always, it was an experience…
…Tuesday was Galatoire’s lunch day with Altamura Distilleries! This was an event I was super excited about because it isn’t every day you get to have a fancy lunch at a New Orleans restaurant with tasty martinis provided by an incredible brand.

The meal included delicious appetizers, Turtle Soup, Sauteed Gulf Fish with Crab Meuniere, and Bread Pudding for dessert.
Altamura kept the cocktails coming including, Prosecco and Altea Martini, Maize Martini, and Espresso Nuttiny served with dessert. Halfway through, owner Frank Grillo was presented with the New Orleans Spirits Competition for Best International Vodka.
Very exciting!

RECAP: TALES OF THE COCKTAIL IN NEW ORLEANS
…Of particular note was Lunch at Galatoire’s. Friday afternoon lunch at Galatoire’s is a THING, and my favorite lunch ritual. This time it was a Three- Martini Lunch event for TOTC, instead of the traditional Milk Punch Lunch, but just as good!
It was hosted by Frank Grillo, an American who moved to Italy and discovered Altamura bread. The bread was so much better than any other bread that he had experienced that he thought, “what would happen if I used the grain to make a spirit instead of bread?” and he did it.
The lunch at Galatoire’s celebrated Frank Grillo’s birthday—which had been his birthday tradition for 16 years—and the launch of Altamura Vodka. The vodka is made in Apulia using the same 2000 year-old ancient-wheat grain that is used to bake the famous Pane di Altamura. The vodka is still in its infancy, and has already racked up the awards, including the Best in Category for International Vodka at the 2023 NOLA Spirits Competition. If you are a vodka drinker, this one’s for you!
